Mental Health Therapy Programs to Get a Boost of $20 Million from the Government

Emphasizing the need to provide free access to mental health programs, the government is set to announce a new program in Ontario. The program is called Mindability. It was introduced after three years of pilot programs that were operating in major mental health hospitals in the province.

It is the first of its kind in Canada and involves massive spending of $20 million. This is part of the $3.8 billion that was announced by the government to facilitate addiction services as well as mental health programs over the next decade.

The province, along with the rest of the country, is giving precedence for the need to have access to quality and free treatment for mental wellbeing.

What this program aims to target

Under the new program –

  • Free cognitive-behavioural therapy will be provided. The therapy can be accessed online or by phone. In-person consultation will also be provided.
  • It will cover individuals, families, as well as the youth who are above the age of 10.
  • A branch of the program which will allow people to receive telephonic support from a certified therapist while using a self-directed manual is to be launched in the spring of 2020.
  • A pilot program that caters to the children and the youth is scheduled to start operating in the winter of 2021.
  • Anyone struggling with depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD can benefit from the new program. People struggling with addictions can also be the right candidate for the program as well.
  • The program aims to help up to 80,000 people every year with talk therapy.

Highlights of the program

When the new program is fully functional, you can expect the following:

  • Potential patients can be referred for the program by their doctors. In some cases, patients will be able to self-refer.
  • Patients will undergo an initial screening, which will be conducted by a mental health clinician. This will help determine the right treatment for the patients.
  • Patient outcomes from the treatment will be measured. This is a unique component of the program. This step will help therapists to step up the treatment if needed. Additionally, it will also allow the system to keep track of the progress of the program.
  • The program will commence in phases in the province. Patients will have access to a one-stop 8-1-1 number through which they can use the services. Some branches of the program will be accessible towards the end of the year.
Psychotherapy Harmony Counselling

The Most Effective Type of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy has become an indispensable part of treating a number of disorders. Some of the most common areas where psychotherapy has proven its efficacy include cognitive behavioral therapy, systems-based therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, among others.

They are used in isolation or in combination with another form of therapy. All of these types of psychotherapy come with different outcomes. They are also applied in different situations.

This inevitably makes you wonder which of these types of psychotherapy is the most effective. This post is an attempt to find out the answer to this question.

Which is the most effective approach in psychotherapy?

According to experts from the field, all the approaches of psychotherapy are equally effective. This means that there is no one approach that is superior to another. Although this may seem confusing to begin with, the reasons behind this explanation are quite straightforward.

Regardless of the type of approach of psychotherapy used in the treatment, three common traits are observed. This is based on the results published in one research. They are:

  • Building positive relationships – This typically starts between the therapist and the patients. There is an unmistakable bond between the two parties, which rubs off on the other relationship, especially in the life of the patient.

An increasing number of studies point to the fact that up to 80% of the patient’s positive influence can be attributed to this bond and a positive relationship with the therapist.

  • Compelling rationales – The therapist provides convincing yet psychologically derived explanations when the patient is under emotional stress. Therapists have the innate knack to make compelling explanations that makes sense to the patients. Regardless of the clients’ condition and situation, the explanation must make sense to the particular client.

  • Targeted change – The patient undergoes a number of procedures and exercises that aims to result in a helpful and positive outcome under the supervision of the therapist. Some of these practices are aimed to be adaptive, meaning that the patient can overcome difficulties using them.

It also involves breaking the pattern of behavior by the patients. These three steps also constitute the quality of success in psychotherapy, irrespective of the approach used in treatment. Without these three crucial components, any approach in psychotherapy is bound to be a failure.

What defines an effective change in psychotherapy?

Many researchers believe that without this third step, there is no point in psychotherapy. This means that a client must show a shift in problematic patterns or reversal of the patterns.

All the approaches in psychotherapy identify problems that are faced by the patients as patterns and cycles. They go round in vicious cycles that plague the patient.

But fortunately, these problems make sense to him or her. This is the reason why psychotherapy clients have an overwhelming feeling of being consumed by the problem, especially before he or she can make sense of the problem.

Therefore, when the client shows a shift in this problematic pattern or a sign of reversal, it is referred to as effective change.

online mental health programs

Online Mental Health Program Funded by Nova Scotia to All Post Secondary Students

On 30 October 2018, the Government of Nova Scotia disclosed a recent public e-health program for every post-secondary student in the Province.

Elizabeth Cawley from the Association of Atlantic Universities initiated the online support program that offers seven mental health services to the students who, according to researches, are most susceptible to mental health issues.

The aim

The mental health support program, also known as HealthMindsNS was initiated because many students who need mental health services were not seeking the help because of the stigma that “seeking help” implies. Though there are no researches conducted for the need of such a program, it is broadly estimated that post-secondary students are more prone to mental challenges than any other age groups and the program is required.

Since the majority of the students and counselors use the internet, the online program also aims to reach more students simultaneously without packing the counseling services on campus.

Positive Response

Students welcome the program as it makes it convenient to approach the counselors than spending a limited one hour in a room. Online help is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.

Different Types of Services

The program provides video chat therapy, mood training sessions, relaxation activities, and telephone counseling to help the students cope with anxiety, stress, depression and destructive behavior.

Preventive Approach

The program has a preventive approach to help students deal with the pressure and stress. It aims to reduce the burden of counseling services and provide timely assistance to students without the fear of getting stigmatized and paying service fees.

Hopes For Federal Funding

The eight months trial period is expected to generate extensive data that can be used to improve counseling services all over the Province within the shortest duration.

The provincial government currently funds it with a budget of 463,000, but with further progress and more substantial collected data on the effectiveness of the program, Cawley hopes that the program will be federally funded.

Put yourself on the first place

Individual treatment is often termed as psychotherapy, and is meant to help people with their emotional issues, which can range in order of their severity or intensity. The main aim of this form of therapy is to change the quality of life by defining the path of life clearly, and bringing in more clarity. Whether it is the problem of repressed childhood that you are facing, or an emotional breakdown due to divorce, failure or loss of a loved one, a professional psychologist can help you revive your mental health through systematic counselling.
